Mount Allison University

Commonly known as MTA, Mount Allison University is a public Canadian college situated in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. The university specializes in liberal arts education at the undergraduate level. Established in 1843, it was granted the university status in 1849. The university is one of the leading institutes of higher education in the country.

The university has a beautiful campus occupying an area of 76 acres. The campus is home to more than 2000 students representing more than 50 different nationalities. The university maintains a student-faculty ratio of 17:1. The university provides bachelor’s degrees in science, arts, commerce, fine arts, and music. The institution offers more than 40 study programs with five-degree options.

It offers master’s degrees in biology and chemistry and biochemistry, and certificates in bilingualism. Apart from this, it offers a programme in science with a major in aviation in association with Moncton Flight College. Moreover, students are offered 31 study abroad programmes in 20 countries.

The university has around 140 clubs and societies and more than 30 clubs and intramural sports teams. The university also has a student union called the Mount Allison Students’ Union, which represents all full- and part-time students at the campus. Other than this, the university publishes a weekly campus paper called The Argosy, which is an independent and one of the oldest student publications in the country.

It also has a campus and community radio station, namely CHMA 106.9 FM. Moreover, the athletic teams of the university are known as Mounties. The university offers opportunities to indulge in sports, including hockey, swimming, badminton, soccer, basketball and volleyball. The university is known to be the first university in the British Empire to grant a bachelor’s degree to a woman. The university used to have James B. Sumner as a teaching fellow who later won Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Mount Allison University has an alumni base of around 25,000 graduates. Some of the known alumni of the university include Robert Barritt (Bermudian painter and politician), Kate Beaton (cartoonist), Winthrop Pickard Bell (historian and philosopher), Rick Black (CFL football player, Grey Cup champion), Harold Lothrop Borden (military officer) and Kate Braid (poet).
