The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is a private craftsmanship and plan school in Baltimore, Maryland. It was established in 1826 as the Maryland Institute for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts, making it one of the most seasoned craftsmanship universities in the United States. Being an old art college, it has gained a good reputation in the academic sphere. The college is a part of many independent college associations like the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD), a consortium of 36 driving US workmanship schools, just as the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
Maryland Institute College of Art has witnessed a number of wars and has been rebuilt twice. The college is recognized as the leader in the field of arts. Unfortunately, the college was destroyed by a fire and the college had to stop offering the studies for 12 years. The New Maryland Institute was revamped in 1847 and, after two years, it built the Night School of Design to satisfy the developing city’s need for talented craftsmen and architects. In October 1851, the school moved to the new Center Market on Baltimore Street. By the start of the twentieth century, the Maryland Institute boasted of more than one thousand undergraduates to train them in the field of arts and architecture. In 1959, the school embraced another name, the Maryland Institute, College of Art, and, in recent decades, the grounds have developed to include a train station, an old firehouse, and a former production line factory.
Today, MICA’s Main Building is a lovely token of the school’s long history, making it the most seasoned school of craftsmanship in the country. The school has received accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) since 1967 and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) since 1948. The college designs the curriculum of courses keeping in mind the industrial demand and holistic knowledge of the students. The college is currently providing bachelor’s and master’s programs in a plethora of courses. Some of the courses are provided online as well for the welfare of international students. The college is known in the country for its diverse students and rich academic excellence. The student to mentor ratio in the college is 8 to 1, making it convenient for the mentors to look after the students. BFA, MA, MAT, MBA, MFA, MPS are the programs that can be opted by the students interested in arts and architecture.
The campus has several buildings from different periods of Baltimore. The main campus of the college was built in 1908 and was designed by the New York-based architects Pell & Corbett, who were renowned for their high-level skills. The skill-building center, Bunting Centre houses departments like Writing Centre, academic advising, and the registrar. There are cafes and restaurants available in the building as well.
