The Jesuits set up the university in 1852, so when it came to deciding on a name for this institution, they drew their inspiration from St. Ignatius of Loyola, and hence the name. It was the first-ever university in the US to bear the name of Loyola. Even today, the university is committed to all the principles which have been personified by the members of the Society.
Loyola aims to prepare students and build them into amazing leaders at the apprentice as well as the graduate levels. The program is comprehensive and the faculty have great expectations from the students. Students are forced to consider personal and professional ethical aspects and to analyze their own principles, approach, and faiths. The Jesuit mission is funded by an assortment of courses and activities organized by various departments of the university, besides the usual academic excellence. For all the undergraduate students, the university has a wide array of academic scholarships, grants based on the needs of individual students, grants for the athletic students, along with all the well known federal aids like the grants and the state financial aid.

There is the option of taking up Graduate assistantships or borrowing funds under the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program which has been helping many students fulfill their dream of receiving a quality education.
