Established in 1929, Los Angeles City College is an open college that offers higher education. Set in East Hollywood, the college is a part of the Los Angeles Community College District. It is presently located on the previous campus of the University of California, Los Angeles. Earlier, the college was sharing its space with California State University, Los Angeles, before it moved to its present campus.
The campus rests on an area of 175 acres in the north-eastern part of the city. In the session of 2016-17 and 2017-18, the college had offered 42 certificate courses to students. Moreover, in the same session, 71-degree programs were available. The college boasts of a lively and varied campus. Students can indulge in various specialized and vocational programs at a low cost. The college offers programs including transfer, certificate and degree programs.
Also, it provides advanced education and improved employment opportunities for students and adult learners. Other than this, the college offers one year of free enrolment to all full-time students graduating from LAUSD high schools and charter schools. Not only this, but it also offers music majors monetary aid and private classes with the help of the Herb Alpert Foundation.
Additionally, students of the college are offered various benefits from numerous financial support options. The college maintains several career-building facilities for students. It has the University Transfer Center, which provides relevant and up-to-date information regarding transfer and admission necessities for open and private universities across the country, as well as answers on the university transfer process, monetary aid, and student support services. Other than this, it maintains a Counselling Department that helps students in selecting courses to meet their goals. Moreover, it provides scholars programs that help students to get prepared for successful transfer to universities with an enriched and rigorous curriculum, field trips and social events. It also offers first-generation and disabled students academic and personal counseling, monetary help, training, and special courses so that they can be transferred to a 4-year university.
Being the oldest of the Los Angeles Community Colleges, it has offered education to a number of students. Its alumni include noteworthy educators, business leaders, civic leaders, politicians, Oscar, Emmy and Grammy winners, and a Nobel Laureate. Michelle M. Hilario, Mary Cordova, Edika Amin, and Dylan Wilkerson are some of the alumni of the college who have been working for the betterment of society.
