LaGuardia Community College

LaGuardia Community College was established on 22 January 1967 in Long Island City, a neighbourhood of Queens, New York. It is a part of the City University of New York. It was formed by a resolution passed by the Board of Higher Education of the City of New York and was originally designated as “Community College Number Nine”. It was later named after Fiorello H. LaGuardia, a former Congressman and New York City Mayor. It has secured over $17 million from government and foundations. It offers not only associate degrees in the arts, sciences and applied sciences but also continuing education programmes. It currently offers more than 60 majors, certificates and programmes as well as 70 continuing education programmes.

It has 19,236 degree programmes and 16,875 non-degree programmes. The campus is spread over 18 lakh square feet and home to over 36000 students from 150 countries every year. It provides its students with the largest English as a Second Language (ESL) Programme in New York City. On average, a student with an associate degree earns over $400,000 in a year. Also, LaGuardia students have a higher chance (45% more) to get into a 4-year college than others. Its faculty is around 1050, out of which 61% hold doctorates which is more than twice the national average.

Bruce Davidson and Barbara Zucker have been a part of the faculty. The LaGuardia Community College Foundation has risen over $25 million since its formation in 2003 and has provided scholarships and emergency support to more than 15000 students. LaGuardia’s Alumni includes many famous names like Rudy Washington, Arti Cameron and Elliot Wilson.
