Kishwaukee College

Surrounded by cornfields on all four sides, Kishwaukee College has its footing on the village of Malta, Illinois State. Popularly known as Kish, the college was founded over four decades ago in 1968. To maintain the code of conduct and ethics, Kishwaukee has an in-house whistleblower reporting cell. The cell investigates the frauds and misuse of college resources by the staff and the students.

The academics are primarily divided into four categories – Arts & Social Sciences, Career Technologies, Health & Education and Science & Business. The college has a wide range of activities to boost the morale of the students and round up their physical and mental development. That includes athletics where Kish has repeatedly succeeded in Men’s Baseball. Other sporting teams include Men’s Basketball, Women’s Baseball, and cross-country teams. The campus also hosts a number of events such as Kougar kick-off and Kish bash, the annual year-end event. There are over 30 student clubs and organizations and two student publications. Since the college accommodates students of different communities, it is a hub of multiculturalism.

The Kishwaukee College Art Gallery hosts periodic exhibitions to boost the artistic sense and visual diversity among the community. With its programs, it also aims to encourage emerging artists. It also has an in-house bookstore, The Kishwaukee College Bookstore which has a wide collection of required and optional textbooks. The bookstore also sells the college merchandise in the form of backpacks, electronics, snacks, postage stamps, etc. The Kishwaukee Early Learning Centre (ELC) excels in high-quality childhood care for children between the ages of two and five. Apart from this, the disability services department gives access to students with physical and mental disabilities.

A five-minute drive from Northern Illinois University and roughly 60 miles from Chicago, Kishwaukee has continued to offer programs to serve the residents of DeKalb, Rochelle, Sycamore and other surrounding communities. In April 2019. Kish was accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a commission of the Northern Central Association of colleges and schools. Post the completion of accreditation, the college received reaffirmation till 2028.

The student attendance every year surpasses the mark of 5000. Apart from the residents of the neighboring villages, the institution comprises an average 1.6% of Asian students, 0.4% American Indians, 6.6% Black African American students and a whopping 64.6% White students. One of the key stats points out that the female students comprise the majority of the student population with 57%. Students across ages, from 18 to over 60, are gracefully admitted to the college. In terms of placements, according to the Technical Graduate Survey, over 61% of students have secured a job in the related field with an average hourly wage of $15. Lou Collier, an alumnus of the Kish, went onto play for the Pittsburgh Pirates in Major League Baseball.
