Kettering University

A group of visionaries from Flint founded Kettering University in 1919 as The School of Automobile Trades and opened under the direction of Albert Sobey to prepare engineering and management personnel. In 1923, the school turned into the Flint Institute of Technology, offering a cooperative education program and enrolling more than 600 students. Recognizing the capability of cooperative training, the General Motors Corporation took over financial support of the school in 1926, renamed it General Motors Institute, and began using the office to produce engineers and managers. In 1945, the institute added a fifth-year thesis requirement and turned into a degree-granting college with a continuing commitment to cooperative education.

GM removed itself of responsibility for the school in 1982 and the school was renamed GMI Engineering and Management Institute. Likewise in 1982, the establishment started offering graduate programs to on-and off-campus students. The university plans remarkable initiative by connecting transformative experiential learning opportunities to thorough academic programs in engineering, science, mathematics, and business. The university will extend its enrollment through strategic financial aid packages, fixed tuition guarantees, and growth in programs to attract and retain top students who meet the talent demands of a rapidly changing global workforce.

Kettering University’s campus is situated on approximately 90 acres of land along the Flint River on the west side of Flint. The campus is comprised of five buildings and four additional facilities. The university’s academic programs are offered through the College of Engineering, the College of Sciences and Liberal Arts, the School of Management, the Graduate School and Kettering Online. It offers 13 undergraduate degree programs and 11 graduate programs including 5 completely online degrees.

The 8 academic divisions and a school of management incorporate more than 120 full-time faculty who spend significant time in fields of cancer research to renewable energy to fuel cells to entrepreneurship. Since 2010, the staff has received 12 Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) grants from the National Science Foundation, the maximum that any university in Michigan had received at that time.

Kettering University is a pioneer in furnishing STEM and Business students with numerous scholarship opportunities. In addition to merit grants, the university offers several scholarships accessible to new students. All incoming 2020-2021 undergraduate students are free to apply for extra grants.

Kettering University graduates have achieved prominent positions in a wide scope of ventures. Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, is a 1985 Kettering University graduate. Raj Nair, the Ex Group Vice President of Ford Motor Company Engineering, is a 1987 Kettering graduate. Bounce Kagle, a 1978 alumni, is one of the most successful venture capitalists in Silicon Valley history and was an early investor in eBay and Instagram.
