Founded in 1910, Kent State University was started as an institution to train teachers. The school was part of the John Lowry Bill, which also established a sister school currently named Bowling Green State University. Initially, Kent State University was named as Ohio State Normal College at Kent. In 1911, it was renamed as Kent State Normal School. John E. McGilvrey was appointed as the institution’s first president on 17th July 1911. The first full academic year of the institution started in September 1913 with a batch of 144 students. The college was given the name of Kent State College in 1929. It received the status of a university in 1935. Currently, the university holds the accreditation of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
Kent State University owns eight regional campuses across Ohio. The main campus of the eight-campus system is called the Kent Campus and is the university’s main administrative center that is spread across 950 acres. The other regional campuses are East Liverpool Campus, Ashtabula Campus, Geauga Campus, Stark Campus, Salem Campus, Tuscarawas Campus, and Trumbull Campus. Besides these eight campuses in Ohio, the university also has additional academic centers in the country including Cleveland Urban Design and College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, NYC Studio in New York City, Regional Academic Centre in Twinsburg, and School of Information in Columbus and Kent State Hotel in Ohio. The university also has international campuses in Florence in Italy, Geneva in Switzerland, Beijing in China and New Delhi in India.
The university offers over 300 graduate and undergraduate degree programs in several areas of study like accounting, aeronautics, architecture, anthropology, arts, business, science, languages, design, education, engineering, environment, fashion, health, finance, management, journalism, mathematics, nursing, and psychology. The university houses more than 38,000 students from across 104 countries and over 2,700 faculty members. The international collaborations of the university facilitate many study-abroad and student exchange programs. The university has a dedicated Centre for Corporate and Professional Development that focuses on building relations with reputable employers and enhancing the students’ professional skills and employability.
The university has a large network of more than 245,000 alumni worldwide. Many notable names are associated with the university. Michael Keaton is an actor, director and producer best known for his roles in the sitcoms like The Mary Tyler Moore Hour and All’s Fair and the films Night Shift, Johnny Dangerously, Mr. Mom and Beetlejuice. Jeffrey Richmond is a popular composer, director, actor, and producer. James Harrison used to be a famous American football linebacker. Dav Pilkey is an illustrator and author of children’s literature, well-known for the children book series and Dumb Bunnies and Captain Underpants. Louis Leo Holtz is a former football player, analyst, and coach. Dolph Ziggler is a renowned professional wrestler. Many other successful people are graduates of the university.
