A non-profit and private institution, Johnson and Wales University (JWU) was established in the year 1914 as a business school. It was founded by Mary T. Wales and Gertrude I. Johnson in Providence, Rhode Island. Johnson and Wales University was accredited in 1954 by ACICS (Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools). The state of Rhode Island had granted a charter in 1963 to JWU authorizing them to operate as an institution that can grant higher education degrees in business administration, secretarial sciences, accounting, and court reporting. The university was permitted to award graduate degree programs in 1985. And in 1988, the university had officially changed its name to Johnson and Wales University.
The university has campuses in 4 locations. The first campus was opened in Providence, Rhode Island. The part called Downside was opened in 1914 and has the hospitality, business, and technology programs. Another subsidiary campus called Harborside offers graduate and culinary programs. It was opened in 1985. The second campus was established in 1992 in North Miami, Florida. The third campus that is in Florida was opened in 2000. The fourth campus is in Charlotte, North Carolina and was established in 2004.
