Founded in 1875, Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) is a highly-ranked, public-funded research university in Indiana County. It was originally set up as the Indiana Normal School in 1871 under the Normal School Act passed by the General Assembly. In 1875, the school officially began operating in a single building with 225 students. The institution went through many names and structural changes before finally achieving the university status in the year 1965 under its current name. It has sports affiliation from NCAA Division II.
IUP has its main campus in the heart of Indiana and satellite campuses in Northpointe, Pittsburgh East, Punxsutawney, and Harrisburg. The 354-acre main campus consists of walkways, parking spaces, athletic facilities and 75 well-maintained buildings that house administrative offices, classrooms, laboratories, and dining centers. Stapleton Library holds a rare and unique collection of over 9 lakh printed volumes and 2 million electronic resources. It owns a 280-acre recreational park and the Hadley Complex situated at a short distance from the campus. IUP boasts of its College Lodge where students can indulge in disc golfing, biking, skiing, and hiking.
Nine residence halls on the campus accommodate over 3,500 students in suite-style living units. Other facilities featured on the campus include an extensive music library, planetarium, health and wellness centers, a gym, a pool, a multicultural and religious center, a museum, a theatre, and a police academy. The campus is in proximity to restaurants, coffee shops, museums, parks and various shopping plazas that also house movie theatres. Bus service is available from the campus for getting around in the town.
IUP has eight colleges comprising of various departments, with each focusing on a particular field of study. It offers 140 undergraduate and about 70 postgraduate programs in fine arts, humanities, social sciences, business, information technology, education, health, human services, mathematics, and natural sciences. It also extends learning opportunities to working professionals through the evening and online classes. With about 12,853 students and 700 academic staff members on roll, the student-teacher ratio at IUP is 17:1.
The university has industrial relationships with numerous companies and organizations that provide internship and job opportunities to students. Besides, it has several student clubs and organizations that promote community relationships and learning through educational, sports and entertainment events. There are 8 men’s and 11 women’s sports teams, which are known as Crimson Hawks.
