Hawaii Pacific University

Hawaii Pacific University is also known as HPU. It is a non-sectarian and private college. It was founded by Paul C.T Loo, Elizabeth Kellerman. Eureka Forbes and Reverend Edmond Walker. The university is located in Honolulu, Hawaii. There are a plethora of programs to choose from that include Arts and Markets, Biochemistry, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Social Work and Public Health among others in the Undergraduate set. There are many programs under the Graduate Program like the Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Global Leadership, and Sustainable Development, Educational Leadership, Secondary Education, World Languages, Master of Social Work (MSW), Doctorate of Clinical Psychology, etc. among others. The college was established in 1965 and is affiliated to NAICU. The president of the college is John Y. Gotanda and the number of students is 4,998.

Out of the total number of students, there are 4,260 as undergraduates and 738 as postgraduates. One of the most unique courses at the Oceanic Institute of HPU is the research for aquaculture located in the Makiapu’u point. It is also there on the military installations on the island of O’ahu. Four main campuses are the Honolulu Campus (main), Hawaii Loa Campus, Oceanic Institute and Military Programs. It is made up of six colleges that are the College of Business, College of Health and Society, College of Liberal Arts, College of Professional Studies and College of Natural and Computational Sciences.

They also have provision for distance learning and an online-based platform for its programs. They also have an extensive facility for abroad studies and an excellent Student Exchange Program. The college is regionally credentialed by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and has received reaffirmation extending till 2022. They received their accreditation for B.Ed and M.Ed programs by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. The Nursing program BSN and MSN degrees were approved by the Hawai’i Board of Nursing and have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The Social Work Programs’ BSW and MSW degrees were accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. One of the notable faculties is Ken Schoolland and who is the Associate Professor of Economics and the author of Jonathan Gullible and shogun’s Ghost: The Dark Side of Japanese Education. He is also the Member of the Board of Directors for the International Society for Individual Liberty and Sam Walton Fellow for Students in Free Enterprise.

Notable alumni include Christopher Loeak who is the President, Republic of the Marshall Islands and Tulsi Gabbard who is an American politician and the current U.S Representative for Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district and candidate for President among others. Notable attendees of the college are Sarah Palin who is the U.S politician (she attended one semester in 1982 at Hawaii Pacific College) and Chad Rowan (also known as Akebono or Taro, sumo Grand Champion Yokozuna and professional and K-1 wrestler, played varsity basketball for the university).
