George Mason University is a public research institution which was initially founded in 1949 as a branch of the Virginia University. In the year 1972, it became an independent institution with its main campus being located in Fairfax, Virginia. The university was named after its founding father, George Mason, who drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights which proved helpful for the U.S. Constitution’s Bill of Rights. Around 500 student groups along with 41 fraternities and sororities are recognized by the university.
George Mason University operates three campuses in Virginia and a fourth campus in Songdo in South Korea. The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) has accredited George Mason University to award undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees. Around 38,200 students, including 26,013 undergraduates, 2,156 studying for doctoral degrees, 7,173 postgraduates, and 600 working for law degrees, were admitted by the university in the year 2019. It hosts more than 100 million dollars in sponsored research projects on an annual basis.
