Established in 1925, Gannon University is a four-year private Catholic university. Started as a college of arts and sciences, under the 1925 charter of Villa Maria College, it was established by John Mark Gannon. In 1944, it received its own charter as a men’s college of 4 years. Later in 1964, after becoming a co-educational institute, it established a graduate school. Finally, in the year 1979, the college was granted University status to offer higher learning.
Popular for educational programs in liberal arts, the university is located in downtown Erie, Pennsylvania. The institute is set at a close distance from business centers, associations, and government organizations that are active associates in helping students to directly understand the industry and workspaces. Also, the university has an additional property in Ruskin, Florida. Other than this, it also offers the facility of distance education by offering a variety of web-based programs and courses that meet the needs of online and campus students alike.
The university offers higher education through more than 100 academic programs including 60 bachelor’s, 11 pre-professional programs, 20 cooperative professional school options, 6 associate degrees, 26 master’s degrees, and 6 doctoral degrees. It maintains three core colleges, namely the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, the College of Engineering and Business (with Dahlkemper School of Business Administration), and the Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences. By the fall of 2019, the university received a total enrolment of 4,444 students.
The university housed a total population of more than 3,208 undergraduate and around 1,043 graduate students, representing a number of nationalities in the same year. Furthermore, the standard class has a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1.
The university offers various scholarships, fundings, and awards that identify educational and athletic achievements, exceptional talents, and demonstrated requirements. Other than this, the university maintains more than 140 clubs and organizations to allow students to take part in a range of extra-curricular activities. Also, it offers 22 varsity sports and is associated with NCAA Division II.
Further, the university has a network of more than 46,000 alumni who are actively contributing to different areas of society. Daniel Cudmore (Canadian actor and stuntman), Zaid Al-Khas, (skilled foreign basketball player), Kevin Benson (Meteorologist for WPXI), Ryan Bizzarro (Member of the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania) and John Brabender (Republican Political consultant) are some of the notable alumni of the university.
