Established in 1863, Emporia State University is an open university situated in Emporia city of Kansas. The university is officially certified with the Higher Learning Commission. Also called ESU or Emporia State, the university was originated from the Kansas State Normal School. Its name was changed in 1923. It became Emporia Kansas State College in 1974 and, finally, in 1977, the college received the status of a university to become Emporia State University. The university is 3rd oldest public institution of higher education in the state and counted amongst the 6 public universities that are run by the Kansas Board of Regents.
The university is home to more than 5,800 students and offers more than 200 academic programs. It maintains four colleges and schools to provide academic facilities. These include the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Teachers College and School of Library and Information Management, and School of Business. Apart from these colleges and schools, it has a branch campus called Kansas City Campus that provides undergraduate and graduate degrees. Moreover, the university maintains several academic and non-academic building buildings. It also has athletic teams known as the Hornets. The women’s teams of the university are quite popular and are called the Lady Hornets. The university participates in NCAA Division II. It has also been a part of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The women’s team is the only team that has won an NCAA championship.
Other than this, it also published a newspaper called ESU Bulletin, which was started in 1901. The newspaper publishes once a week and is run by student fees and advertising. The newspaper is operated by the student staff members. In addition to it, there is a library at the university namely William Allen White Library that houses thousands of print and electronic resources, more than one hundred databases and offers access to over 50 computers/laptops.
Since its inception, the university has successfully graduated hundreds of students, who are now working and contributing to different areas of society. The university has an Alumni Association that maintains an excellent alumni network with around 60 thousand alumni connected. Some of the known and successful alumni include William Coffin Coleman (founder of Coleman Company), L. M. Gensman (Ex-U.S. Representative from Oklahoma), Bob Whittaker (House of Representatives of U.S), Kay Alden (5 time Emmy award-winning television writer), Curt Dawson (stage and television actor), Panos Zavos (reproduction specialist) and Dale Burnett (Ex-NFL player).
