Earlham College is a privately held institute of Liberal Arts in Richmond, Indiana (USA). The history of the college dates back to the 19th century, when the Religious Society of Friends, also known as the Quakers, founded Earlham College in the year 1847. Originally established as a ‘select’ co-educational school open only to Friends, the institute accepted Non-Quaker pupils by the year 1865.
In 1886, the college recruited its first Non-Quaker professor. Currently, nearly 12% of the students and 11% of the faculty at Earlham College identify as Quakers. Earlham College offers various courses (Major and Minor) and programmes in Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Performing & Visual Arts, and Interdisciplinary at both Undergraduate and Graduate levels. Despite being a mainstream residential undergraduate college, the institute offers a Master’s Degree in Teaching. It also has affiliations with a graduate seminary, the Earlham School of Religion, offering a Master’s Degree in three disciplines — Master of Ministry, Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Religion. In addition to these, Earlham College offers pre-professional programmes in Engineering, Social Justice, Social Entrepreneurship, Pre-Med-Health Sciences and Sustainability.
Earlham College has ranked consistently among the top national institutions of Liberal Arts in the country. The institute also prepares and produces candidates for Doctoral programmes. The 800-acres campus of Earlham College includes the Earlham School of Religion and is home to nearly 1200 students pursuing undergraduate courses. Between the years 1998 and 2014, Earlham revamped, expanded, and constructed a few other major buildings on the campus – including residence halls and athletic and academic facilities.
Earlham College believes that foreign students play a key role in exposing the institute globally, and so it grants admission to students from abroad. International students constitute nearly 21% of the total student body at Earlham. The sprawling campus accommodates over 200 foreign students, faculty and language assistants from over 60 countries. The institute takes into account each international application for institutional grant and merit scholarship. Merit scholarships ranging between $12,500 and $45,500 are awarded to deserving students for their exemplary academic performance for up to eight semesters provided they maintain a good GPA score. Institutional grants are offered based on the demonstrated academic accomplishments and financial need.
