The University of Durham is a public research university located in Durham, North East England. It was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832 and was later incorporated in the year 1837 by the Royal Charter. Presently, the University of Durham is a member of the prestigious British research universities’ Russell Group. Durham was the first recognized university to open in England for almost 600 years. Its main functions were divided between its 16 colleges and the academic departments of the university. Additionally, it was bestowed with the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in the year 2018. The university is well-known for its history that spans over 180 years. In 2015, Durham was awarded by Times and Sunday Times as Sports University of the year. The QS World University Rankings ranked it as 78th best university globally in 2018. Also, it is one of the top public universities in Durham, UK. Apart from this, it is ranked at 86th position in QS Global World Rankings 2021.
Durham City and Queen’s Campus in Stockton are the two locations in which the entire estate of the university is divided. The departments of the university conduct research and teach students whereas their respective colleges look after the domestic arrangements and student welfare. The student body of Durham University consists of 14,604 bachelor’s and 4,509 master’s level students. In 2017, the university reported the highest graduate employment rate by any UK university. Durham offers more than 200 undergraduate, 130 postgraduate courses, and research programmes.
Durham alumni are well-known for their significant contribution in the areas of academia, business, journalism, government, arts, law, athletics, science, and several others. Ranging from international to college and sports-affiliated groups, there are around 67 Durham associations that catered to more than 109,000 alumni. Current and emeritus alumni of the university include 17 British Academy fellows, 14 fellows each of the Academy of Social Sciences and the Royal Society, two fellows each of the Royal Society of Arts and the Academy of Medical Sciences along with five Royal Society of Edinburgh fellows. Alumni of the university stay active through events like annual reunions, balls, and dinners.
