Cameron University is a public university that was established in the year 1908 after Oklahoma was recognized as a state. It was one of the six agricultural high schools founded right after the statehood. The first classes were organized in 1909. In 1927, the school added junior college work and became State Agricultural College. The college became junior college as high school programmes were dropped due to World War II. It received authorization to offer baccalaureate degrees in 1966 by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. In 1971, the institution was named Cameron College and finally in 1974, it became Cameron University.
Located in Lawton, Oklahoma, the university is now home to more than 5,500 students with around 5,200 undergraduates and 300 postgraduates. The university serves students from all over the world. It provides around 50 degrees through 2-year, 4-year and graduate programmes. The university offers academic facilities in liberal arts, science and technology, and professional studies. Other than this, it offers honours and study abroad programmes in order to provide exposure and better opportunities to the students. Also, students can avail free tutoring facility in labs across the campus to achieve academic success. Most of the programmes at the university are offered during evenings and weekdays. The university lets students participate in several other programmes, such as independent study, pre-professional studies, cooperative education, teacher certification, and the Army ROTC programme.
The university competes in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as a part of the Lone Star Conference. Students get opportunities to indulge in sports like basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, golf, tennis, and cross country. Other than this, a number of organizations, interest groups and recognition societies are located on the campus. The university also has a student government.
Besides, the university has a great alumni base with graduates working in prestigious and leading organizations. Some of the graduates are known people in sports and politics. Notable alumni of the university include John Brandes (Ex- National Football League special team’s player), William C. Bilo ( US Army Brigadier General), Doug Brown (US Army General and Ex-Commanding General, US Special Operations Command), Jason Christiansen (Major League Baseball pitcher) and Briley Jones (Fiction writer).
