In 1971, a small group of educators created an educational institution, now known as Cambridge College, whose primary mission was to provide educational opportunities and degree attainment for working adults who did not have ready access to higher education. It was first known as The Institute of Open Education within Newton College of the Sacred Heart, and later became part of the Antioch University Network. In 1981, it became an independent, private non-profit institution with the current name. It is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education

It specializes in degree programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Also, it offers distance learning and blended programs in counseling, education, psychology, health care management, management, and human services.
