Established in the year 1968, Brazosport College (abbreviated as BC) is a highly-ranked public institution of higher education in Lake Jackson City of the state of Texas, United States. It was originally set up as Brazosport Junior College to offer a range of associate degree and undergraduate programmes. The institution began imparting education at the Brazosport Education Extension Center, which is in Freeport. BC had 879 students enrolled in the first semester and awarded its first degrees to 25 students in 1970. In the same year, the institution witnessed a name change and hence, it got its current name. It holds accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 2004.
BC has a beautiful campus in a suburban neighbourhood of Lake Jackson City. The 156-acre site features academic buildings, administrative offices, recreational spaces, pathways, parking areas and green spaces. The institution provides state-of-the-art educational facilities and various support services to ensure an excellent learning experience for students. The Byron and Sandra Sadler Health Professions Science Complex and Dow Academic Center are the main academic buildings of the college. The 4,200 sq m Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences is home to the facilities of arts and science departments, which includes an art studio, gallery, fully-equipped planetarium, performing stages and the Museum of Natural Sciences.
Another important building on the campus is the 2,700 sq m facility named The Clarion, which is used as the performance hall and can accommodate up to 600 people. Opened in the year 2005, the total value of this building is worth $7.36 million. The Swamp is the main activity centre where students can indulge in various recreational activities, including playing pool and table tennis. The campus has a central dining facility, where students, faculty and visitors can enjoy healthy, hygienic and tasty food and beverages. Apart from this, the college ensures the health and well-being of students through regular health assessments and on-time medical services. It does not provide housing facility on the campus but renders all the possible assistance to students in finding good accommodation.
BC comprises various divisions focus on different areas of study, including communication, fine arts, mathematics, life sciences, computer technology, office administration, construction, mechanical technologies, physical sciences, process technologies, business, transitional education and social sciences. It offers various undergraduate, associate and transfer degree programmes. At present, the total student enrolment at BC is 4,155, 21% of which are full-time learners.
BC has a vast alumni network across the globe, which includes successful and renowned artists, businessmen, politicians, writers and actors. Robert Ellis, a Houston-based singer and songwriter who is known for its work that is a unique blend of country, jazz and pop music, is an alumnus of the college. Candace Duval, a former Democratic nominee to the U.S. House of Representatives, is another popular name in the alumni list.
