Established in 1984, Box Hill Institute of TAFE is a vocational and higher educational institution. It is associated with the Centre for Adult Education. The institute merged with the Whitehorse Technical School in the year of establishment. Initially, it was known as the Box Hill College of TAFE. Later on, the institute was renamed to its current name in 1994. The institute is known to be a part of the two box hill technical schools that later became colleges providing higher education.
In 2016, the institute opened its campus Lilydale Lakeside to provide easier access to the students. The campus comprises five well-developed buildings, a child care centre, and an Interim Trades Centre. The students are provided with all the facilities required at the campus. They experience a calm learning environment. Many industry professionals visit the campus for interactive sessions, guest lectures, and practical workshops. All the fests, events, debates, competitions, and seminars organized by the institute are held within the campus.

Also, the students can easily avail of public transport from the campus. The institute offers undergraduate programs and postgraduate programs. The academic structure of the institute includes various subjects like animal science, biotechnology, business, fashion, music, and information technology. The institute also offers vocational courses in the fields of tourism, beauty, health, automotive, electrical, engineering, construction, business, graphic design, art, dance, music, fashion, live production, and the English language. The students also get great opportunities to learn alongside professionals at big companies as interns. The students are taught by experienced faculty members. They also get great opportunities to go for the student exchange program. This gives them a better understanding of industry-related work.
