Ball State University

Established in 1918, Ball State University is a public research university in Muncie, Indiana, founded by the Ball Brothers – industrialists and founders of the Ball Corporation. The university has two satellite facilities in Fishers and Indianapolis.

Classified among ‘R2: Doctoral Universities-High research activity,’ the university is spread across an area of 731 acres and includes 109 buildings centered mostly on their two main quadrangles – the Old Quad and New Quad. The university campus also includes nearly 8,000 trees of about 625 species. Students would be happy to note that the university offers around 190 undergraduate majors and 130 minor areas of study and over 140 master’s, doctoral, certificate, and specialist degrees.

The university is composed of eight academic colleges, viz., Teachers College (Est: 1918), College of Sciences and Humanities (Est: 1926), College of Applied Sciences and Technology (Est: 1948), Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning (Est: 1965), Miller College of Business (Est: 1966), College of Communication, Information, and Media (Est: 1966), College of Fine Arts (Est: 1935), College of Health (Est: 2016). Through these eight colleges, the university offers seven associate degrees, 178 bachelors, 99 masters, two specialist degrees, and 17 doctoral degrees.

As of 2019, Ball State University welcomed a record 22,541 students, including its largest, most academically qualified, and most diverse freshman class in the institution’s 101-year history. Out-of-state students make up about 20 percent of enrollment, and ethnic minorities comprise about 16 percent. The university enrolls more than 500 international students.

Ball State University operates multiple residence halls, many of which are located within the campus. The university caters to 400 student clubs and organizations on campus, inclusive of more than 30 sororities and fraternities. About 2,250 students serve as community volunteers every year to approximately 175 community partners. The university also has a university singer’s Glee club and a 200-member Pride of Mid-America Marching Band. Ball State University is a member of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and Mid-American Conference.

The university’s multicultural organizations comprise Latin Student Union, Asian American Student Association, Spectrum, and Black Student Association. Other recognized groups include Student Voluntary Services, Residence Hall Association, and Student Government Association. The university participates and competes in the NCAA Division I (FBS) and is a part of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). It also competes at the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA).

Ball State University includes more than 180,000 living alumni. Ball State University most notable alumni include, David Letterman – former host of the Late Show; Angela Ahrendts – former CEO of Burberry and former Apple Inc. executive; Prof Dan Kgwadi – Vice-Chancellor North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa; Jim Davis – creator of the Garfield comic strip; Doug Jones – Actor; Joyce DeWitt – Actress; Kent C. Nelson – former President and CEO of UPS; Jeffrey D. Feltman – United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, former U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon; Angelin Chang – Grammy Award-winning classical pianist; and John Schnatter, founder of Papa John’s Pizza, among several others.
