Established in the year 1909, Arkansas Tech University (ATU) is a highly-ranked public institution for higher education and research in Russellville. It was originally set up as the Second District Agricultural School under Arkansas General Assembly’s Act 100. In 1925, the institute’s name was changed to Arkansas Polytechnic College. It was in the year 1976 that ATU was granted the university status under its current name. In 2003, ATU took over the Arkansas Valley Technical Institute based in Ozark, which has acted as its satellite campus ever since then. The institution has accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. It holds sports affiliation from NCAA Division II.
ATU boasts of its 516-acre campus that includes administrative offices, academic blocks, recreational facilities, and residence halls. Its high-tech library possesses a rare and unique collection of books, documents, journals, databases, and e-journals. The university has separate audio and media labs that offer incredible multimedia production tools and software. ATU has a store on the campus where students can buy books, bags, stationery products, apparel, and gift items. The campus also features a 6,500-seater stadium, sports complex, athletic training and development center, baseball field, museum, and dining centers.
Arkansas Tech University has six colleges that offer various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs under distinct departments. It provides specialization in various disciplines of arts and humanities, applied sciences, business, health, and natural sciences, professional community studies, and education. Apart from this, ATU extends online programs through its College of eTech. At present, the university has about 11,829 students, including over 8,919 undergraduates, and about 814 postgraduates. The university has students and employees from about 40 states of the United States. The student-teacher ratio at ATU is 18:1.
There are around 172 student clubs and organizations in the university that organize and coordinate various events, competitions, and programs. They focus on various interests like debate, public speaking, dance, music, and athletics. It also has a sports club that allows students to indulge in cycling, fishing, soccer, and paddling.
ATU possesses an extensive list of alumni who are highly successful, famous, and award winners in their respective fields. Few distinguished names in the alumni list are Denny Altes (Former Politician), Tanner Marsh (Professional Footballer), Robert E. Dale (American Politician), Kelley Linck (Politician), Rebecca Petty (Advocate and Politician), Bryson Morris (Baseball Pitcher), John Burris (Former American Politician), Greg Standridge (Insurance Agent and Politician) and Steve Womack (American Politician).
