Established in 1893, American University is a private research university which is associated with the Consortium for North American Higher Education Collaboration, Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, Association of Professionals Schools of International Affairs, the International School of Methodist-related College & Universities and the National Association of Independent Colleges & Universities. In 1934, the School of Public Affairs was opened. The university then decided to merge with Washington College of Law in 1949 and introduced the school of law which was a coeducational institute.

The total strength of the university is 13,347 students. It offers an undergraduate program and a postgraduate program. The academic curriculum of the university has a wide variety of subjects that are categorized into various departments and institutes. This gives students a great opportunity to choose among the course as per their area of interest. The students are provided with ample knowledge to learn about the fieldwork. Many professionals often visit University Guest Lectures and practical workshops.

The campus of the university covers about 84 acres of land and provides housing facilities to the students. It also features academic buildings that are designed by the well-known architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. The infrastructure of the campus is well-maintained. Moreover, the American Public Garden Association has designated the campus as a public garden and arboretum. It has a seating capacity for 5,000 students, approximately.
