Established in 1965 as Algoma College, Algoma University is an open university that was initially an affiliate of Laurentian University in Sudbury. It was then changed to Cambrian College and later, the university was renamed to Algoma University.
In 2009, the university conferred its first degree as an independent university. In 1995, the construction of residential buildings for students began which was completed by 2005. Over the years, the university witnessed a huge expansion in the number of enrolments.
The university offers undergraduate degree programs. The program allows pursuing both 3-year and 4-year courses. The academic structure of the university involves various programs like biology, business, science, computer science, history, social work, sociology, political science, English, geography, psychology, music, fine arts, and community development.
Faculty members are well-experienced and provide students with ample knowledge. Students get opportunities for industrial visits and work as interns under professionals. In addition, the university provides certificate programs for various areas of specialization.
The university campus comprises digital classrooms, faculty offices, research offices, and administrative houses. It features three residence houses, namely Dr. Lou Lukenda which has 45 single bedrooms, Spirit Village townhouse which consists of 15 townhouses, and the downtown residence which comprises fully-furnished rooms. Students are provided with all the facilities required on the campus.
In 2012, a dormitory was opened which includes a single bed, wardrobe, desk, and Wi-Fi access free of charge. All the fests, events, competitions, and quizzes organized by the university take place within the premises. The campus is located nearby many cafes and restaurants, departmental stores, and chemist and stationery shops for students’ convenience. Public transport is easily available from the campus.
The university has a list of notable alumni that includes Michael Cachagee (human rights activist), Ryan Harnden (Olympics gold medallist), Sherley Fletcher Horn (advocate), Kevin Hodson (professional ice hockey player), Josephine Mandamin (water activist), Roxanne Martin (author and artist), and Joanne Robertson (author).
