Albany State University

Albany State University is a predominantly black, public university in Albany, Georgia. It was founded in 1903 by Dr. Joseph Winthrop Holley. In 2017, Albany State University (ASU) and Darton State University consolidated to become one university under the University System of Georgia. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

ASU has a campus in Albany and a satellite campus in Cordele. Albany State University adopts the semester-based academic calendar. There are three semesters – summer, fall, and spring. The James Pendergrast Memorial Library is a modern, 73,000 square foot facility, which opened in 1994, and has a seating capacity of more than 600. Its collections offer over 205,000 volumes of academic books, print and electronic journals, and special collections that exist to serve the reading, research, and reference needs of the students and faculty and staff of the university.

The university has three colleges: The Darton College of Health Professionals offers programs in Nursing, Health Sciences, and Health and Human Performance; The college of professional studies has a business division, Criminal justice division, Education division, Social works division, MBA, Masters of Public Administration, and army (ROTC); The college of arts and sciences provides programs in Biological sciences, chemistry and Forensic sciences, English, communication, mathematics, computer science, sociology, history, political science and interdisciplinary studies and much more.

Albany State University offers online/distance learning in a whole range of subjects, including accounting, allied health, anthropology, arts and humanities, biology, business administration, chemistry, communications, data processing. ASU is actively encouraging sports amongst its students. ASU coaches the students for their different sporting teams who compete in games across the country. The university has a formidable football team nicknamed ‘Golden Rams’ and is affiliated to the NCAA Division II The men sports include baseball, basketball, football, golf as well as track and field events. The women’s sports include basketball, softball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and track and field events.

Notable alumni from Albany State University include Jo Marie Payton, an actress; Dan Land, ex-football player NFL, and coach; Alice Coachman, athlete, and Olympic gold medallist; Shirley Sherrod, former director of rural development department of Agriculture; Keyon Nash, played NFL professional football, A Zachary Faison, American academic administrator, attorney and the 30th President and CEO of Edward Waters College, to name a few.
