The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is the Air Force’s graduate school of engineering and management as well as its institution for technical professional continuing education. Established in the year 1919, the school started as an educational center for select officers. However, after a century, it has grown into a leading educational institution for not only officers but also enlisted and international students, Department of Defence civilians, as well as members of all branches of the armed services. The institution is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission. The institute also has an affiliation with four schools, namely The Civil Engineer School, The Graduate School of Management and Engineering, The School of Strategic Force Studies, and The School of Logistics & Systems.
The Graduate School of Management and Engineering is a nationally-recognized, Carnegie-classified High Research Activity doctoral institution. It is the sole degree-granting entity at AFIT. The Graduate School currently offers 23 research-based, STEM master’s degree programs, 14 Ph.D. programs, and 8 graduate certificate programs. The School of Logistics & Systems is the Air Force’s provider of professional continuing education courses in the areas of data analytics, acquisition management, contracting, financial management, logistics management, and systems and software engineering. The Civil Engineer School offers PCE or Professional Continuing Education courses that are structured to educate aspiring Air Force engineers to offer a continuous flow of competent engineers for the Air Force.
The School of Strategic Force Studies runs PCE programs (nuclear, space, and cyber) through the Nuclear College at Kirtland AFB, National Security Space Institute at Peterson AFB, and AFIT at Wright-Patterson AFB. AFIT, through its Civilian Institution Programs also manages the academic programs for officers enrolled in civilian hospitals, research centers, industrial organizations, and universities. Students attending these programs in civilian institutions have received over 12,000 graduate and undergraduate degree programs in the last two decades.
Currently, AFIT provides graduate and continuing education for nearly 33,000 students each year. Since its foundation in November 1919, the Air Force Institute of Technology has featured some of the most accomplished and world-famous scientists and engineers among its alumni. The list of names includes Air Force pioneers like General George Kenney, General Jimmy Doolittle, and General Bernard Schriever, and others. Major General Donald Lamberson considered the “father” of high-energy laser weapons, earned his master’s and doctorate degrees at AFIT
