  • The MFA is the terminal degree in the discipline. It is the primary objective of the program to focus on the demands of developing a career as a practicing professional artist. Some experience as an art educator is also provided.
  • The emphasis in the Visual Arts Program is based on intensive studio work. Critical concepts and discussion form an important element in the program.
  • The program allows students to focus in painting, sculpture, drawing, digital media and video, in an atmosphere in which interdisciplinary practices are also supported.

  •  All applicants with a minimum of a Bachelors's degree or equivalent, though a BFA is preferred. The Faculty of Graduate Studies requires a B average or better for admission

  • Applicants must have scored first class (60%; 7/10) in their undergrad degree
  • Students who have not previously completed the equivalent of 6 units (4 courses) of Art History, 3 units (2 courses) of these at the 300 or 400 level, will be required to take additional courses at the University of Victoria before being granted an MFA

  • The portfolio must include: 
    • 20 digital images (jpg only) OR
    • 10 digital images and 5 links to video files (Vimeo or YouTube)
    • Image Format:
      • Submit jpeg image files only
      • Image resolution must be 72 dpi
      • The maximum pixel dimensions of each image are 1920 x 1080 pixels – Submit RGB color-mode files only
      • Use only alphanumeric characters for the file names
    • Video Format: applicants will have the ability to post a link to a video that they have published online
