The MFA is the terminal degree in the discipline. It is the primary objective of the program to focus on the demands of developing a career as a practicing professional artist. Some experience as an art educator is also provided.
The emphasis in the Visual Arts Program is based on intensive studio work. Critical concepts and discussion form an important element in the program.
The program allows students to focus in painting, sculpture, drawing, digital media and video, in an atmosphere in which interdisciplinary practices are also supported.

Bachelors	60.0% All applicants with a minimum of a Bachelors's degree or equivalent, though a BFA is preferred. The Faculty of Graduate Studies requires a B average or better for admission Applicants must have scored first class (60%; 7/10) in their undergrad degree Students who have not previously completed the equivalent of 6 units (4 courses) of Art History, 3 units (2 courses) of these at the 300 or 400 level, will be required to take additional courses at the University of Victoria before being granted an MFA
