Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering

University of Alabama at Birmingham

Birmingham, Alabama, USA
Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering
Duration4 Years
LevelBachelors Program
  • Biomedical Engineering (BME) is the application of engineering principles and problem-solving techniques to biology and medicine
  • BME knowledge and skills play important roles in modern healthcare — from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery, and from the proliferation of implantable medical devices (such as pacemakers and artificial hips) to more futuristic technologies (such as stem cell engineering and 3D printing of biological organs)
  • Subdisciplines in BME include design and development of active and passive medical devices, orthopedic implants, medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, tissue and stem cell engineering, and clinical engineering, just to name a few
  • Students can choose to concentrate on three areas:
    • Biomechanics- the study of how internal and external forces interact with living tissue to influence structure and function
    • Biomaterials- the study of how synthetic or natural materials are used in constructing artificial organs and tissues as well as how devices or prostheses interact with living tissue
    • Tissue Engineering- the practice of combining scaffolds, cells, and biologically active molecules into functional tissues. The goal of tissue engineering is to assemble functional constructs that restore, maintain, or improve damaged tissues or whole organs
  • The BME undergraduate program prepares graduates to be immediately productive and able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment
  • Students will study subjects like Engineering Graphics, Engineering in Biology, Bioinstrumentation, Biological Transport Phenomena, Living Systems Analysis and Biostatistics, Living Systems Analysis and Biostatistics Laboratory, etc
  • Graduates of the Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program will have:
    • Gained admission to graduate or professional school, or gain employment in engineering and/or health-related professions and
    • Pursued opportunities for professional growth, development, and service
