MiraCosta College is a public community college. The college is located in North San Diego County in California. It is in two locations. One campus is in Cardiff-by-the-Sea and the other one in Oceanside. The school was founded in 1934 and then known as the Oceanside-Carlsbad Junior College Department of the Oceanside High School District.
The school initially offered 16 courses. Students could use these as credit for transfer to the University of California. For those students who did not wish to continue education with a university, the college also offered some vocational courses. Soon after the establishment of the college, the local community voted in favor of its permanent establishment. The California State Board of Education sealed the approval in April 1935.
Students at MiraCosta College can choose from six different Academic and Career Pathways (ACPs). These ACPs provide students with opportunities to narrow down their choices and select a major that best suits their academic interests. Business and Technology, Health Sciences, Languages, Communication, and Humanities, Creative and Applied Arts, Health Sciences, Math and Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences are the ACPs offered by the college. The Business and Technology ACP offers courses in Accounting, Automotive Technology, Business Administration, Technology, Design, and Hospitality. This ACP aims to provide students with industry-relevant skills essentials. For those students that are creatively inclined, the ACP of Creative and Applied arts offers courses that would help students explore their creativity. The courses are ideal for students wanting to pursue careers as dancers, painters, choreographers, talent agents, set designers, etc. For careers in the healthcare sector, students can go for the Health Science ACP that offers courses such as Athletics, Nursing, and Nutrition.
For students wanting to have a career in Languages, Communication and Humanities, the college offers several courses in languages like Spanish, German, English, Japanese, etc. For a career in STEM, the Math and Sciences ACP offers courses like biology, bio manufacturing, biotechnology, computer science, physics, mathematics, chemistry, and earth sciences. The Social and Behavioral Sciences ACP is ideal for students who want to pursue careers in fields like History, Sociology, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, etc.
With 1,274 regular employees and associate faculty, MiraCosta College has a strong faculty body. The college has 204 full-time faculty, 368 classified staff, and 29 administrators. By limiting the size of the class to 30 to 35 students, MiraCosta college ensures personal attention to every student by the professors. The college boasts of cultural and ethnic diversity with students of varied backgrounds and age groups.
