Lehman College

In 1930, Hunter College was built in the Bronx. The campus was used for training women during World War II. Initially, only women would attend the Bronx campus. In September of 1967, the Bronx campus turned into an independent college. It came to be known as Lehman after philanthropist and US senator Herbert H. Lehman. The founding president was Leonard Lief. Lehman College is presently situated at 250 Bedford Park. It is a coed liberal arts college. It receives around 12,639 undergrads and 2,148 postgrads every year.

The college campus covers around 37 acres. The style of architecture of the college is Modern and Collegiate Gothic architecture. It has a multimedia Center, Science hall, classrooms, graphics rooms, laboratories, research greenhouse, a professional theatre known as The Lehman College Center, Lehman College Art Gallery, fitness and athletic facility. The fitness and athletic facility were designed by Rafael Vinoly in a post-modern style. The college was awarded a LEED platinum rating for its rooftop greenhouse initiative. It was awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. The campus of Lehman is situated near the Jerome Park Reservoir. The Lehman College academic structure is made up of Schools, Departments, and Special Programs. The schools include the School of Arts and Humanities, School of Continuing and Professional Studies, School of Education, School of Health Sciences, Human Services, and Nursing, and the School of Natural and Social Sciences.

The departments include the Adult Degree Program, Africana Studies, Anthropology, Art, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Counseling, Leadership, Literacy, and Special Education, Early Childhood and Childhood Education, Economics and Business, English, Earth, Environmental, and Geospatial Sciences, Health Sciences, History, Journalism and Media Studies, Languages and Literatures, Latin American, Latino and Puerto Rican Studies, Library, Mathematics, Middle and High School Education, Music, Multimedia, Theatre and Dance, Nursing, Philosophy, Physics and Astronomy, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences. The Special Projects and Programs include the Adult Degree Program, College Now Program, William E. Macaulay Honors College, Study Abroad, and Tutoring and Academic Support.
