Founded in the year 1925, Claremont Graduate University is a popular private research university in Claremont, California. Also called CGU, the university is a self-governing institution that offers only graduate study programs. It was called University College for 37 years but in 1962, it became Claremont Graduate School and University Center. In 1967, the name of the school changed to Claremont University Center. Finally, in 1998, it was given the name – Claremont Graduate University. The university campus rests on a piece of land of around 550 acres with more than 175 buildings. The university is home to more than 2,000 students with 22 percent of the student body represented by international students coming from over 50 different countries.
The university is a part of Claremont Colleges and enjoys several facilities. The member undergraduate colleges include Pomona College, Scripps College, Harvey Mudd College, Claremont McKenna College, and Pitzer College. The university has a vibrant environment and is divided into seven separate schools. And, these schools include the School of Arts & Humanities, School of Social Science, Drucker School of Management, School of Community & Global Health, School of Educational Studies, Center for Information Systems & Technology, Policy, & Evaluation, and Institute of Mathematical Sciences. Apart from these, the university houses a computer museum namely Paul Gray PC Museum. Claremont Graduate University offers a number of campus resources and several academic support services for the betterment of students. It maintains 24 graduate student organizations and clubs. Students are guided under the assistance of 550 faculty members in the colleges. Other than this, they can utilize four libraries that include over 2 million volumes.
In addition to this, the university maintains an alumni network of over 23,000 members worldwide. It also has a supportive career development team. It has shaped the personality of some of the celebrated people including leading members of government, business leaders, authors, poets, and entertainers. Some of the known alumni include Douglass Adair (American historian and historiographer), Stephen Cambone (first U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence), Tom Cotton (United States Senator and Congressman from Arkansas), Rajiv Dutta (President of Skype and PayPal), Abdulla Yameen (President of The Maldives), Richard Armour (poet and author who wrote over 65 books) and Suzanne Muchnic (art critic, journalist, writer).
