The University of Tennessee (UT) is a public institution of higher education and research established in the year 1794. This university was formerly known as the Bount College in 1794, East Tennessee College in 1807, and East Tennessee University in 1840 before it got the present name. The university was shut down during the Civil War; however in 1869, under the Morrill Act 1862, the state-funded the university to reopen it. In 1892, women started being admitted to the university for a temporary period followed by the acceptance of African-American students in 1952. It has accreditation from many reputed organizations, including the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, the Universities Research Association, and the Oak Ridge Association University.

The University of Tennessee is a multi-campus university with campuses in 4 different locations namely, the Knoxville, Martin, the Health Science Centre and Chattanooga. Each campus has its unique characteristics and facilities. The Knoxville campus provides secure on-campus residency and dining halls. The Martin campus offers more than 97 programmes and is home to over 150 student organizations. The Health and Science Centre, founded in the year 1911, offers research and education opportunities to the students. The Chattanooga campus is home to 101 majors and 120 student organizations. This campus provides on-campus accommodations to the students. UT is composed of 11 colleges that offer more than 360 undergraduate and 530 postgraduate degrees as well as 300 study abroad programmes. The students can pursue their degrees in different medical fields, including dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and medicine. Additionally, this university provides a plethora of online courses that promote flexibility in education. As per the data of Fall 2019, the university admitted 29,460 students out of which 23,290 were undergraduates and 6,170 postgraduates. UT has a rich international student base with students coming from over 90 countries; a high percentage of students comes from India, Iran, and China. It has 1586 full-time instructional staff members on the roll. The student-to-faculty ratio at UT is 17:1.

This university has many notable alumni who are pursuing noteworthy careers. From the field of education, the university has developed graduates like Edward L. Ayers who is the president of the University of Richmond, Lee Giles who is a computer scientist, W.I. Thomas who is a renowned sociologist, and John Rice Irwin who is the founder of Museum of Appalachia. Many famous university alumni belong to the media industry, including Clarence Brown who is a film director, Melanie Hutsell who is a popular comedian, James Denton who is a famous actor, and Dixie Carter who was an actress.
