Established in 1831, New York University (NYU) is a private research university based in New York City. It is one of the biggest private higher education institutes in the United States. The university is known for its undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in social science, fine arts, nursing, and dentistry. The university welcomes students from 133 nationalities, including every state in the USA. From a student body of just 158, it has massively grown to more than 50,000 students today. Not just this, the institution has received 79,462 applications for its UG programs last year, making it the only university in the USA to achieve this record. Apart from a huge amount of research funding, the university also grants a substantial amount to students as financial aid.
NYU includes a number of schools and colleges and the College of Arts and Sciences is the largest amongst all. It also includes the popular Tisch School of the Arts offering undergraduate and graduate programs in dance, acting, film, television, and dramatic writing. Silver School of Social Work; Stern School of Business; School of Law; School of Medicine; Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development are some of the other graduate programs. Its graduates are sought after by recruiters, as indicated by its exemplary performance in the Graduate Employability Rankings 2017.
The campus consists of more than 171 buildings stretch between Manhattan and Brooklyn, acquiring a roughly 230-acre area of land. In 2018, NYU made its way amongst the top 30 institutions globally by the Times Higher Education and Educational Ranking of World Universities. New York University provides employment to approximately 19,000 employees and therefore stands as one of the biggest employers in the city. The institution boasts of more than 300 student organizations on campus like WNYU, the student radio station that streams online and broadcasts on a local FM channel to the university community. The university has its campuses in New York, Shanghai, and Abu Dhabi, and the university's affiliates operate in 25 countries globally.
Graduating more than 500,000 students from the United States and 183 foreign countries, its alumni are working in almost every field of the world. It includes Heads of state, CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, inventors, royalty, eminent scientists, entrepreneurs, media figures as well as astronauts. As of 2018, a number of Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, Fields Medallists, Academy Award winners, and a huge number of members of the National Academies of Sciences have been affiliated as the faculty or alumni of NYU.
