Founded in 1817, The University of Michigan (U-M, UM, U of M, or UMich) is a leading public research university in the US. Located in Ann Arbor, one of the best college towns in the US, the university is home to more than 46,000 students coming from more than 139 countries and all 50 states of the United States. Nearly two-thirds of the students are undergraduates. The Ann Arbor campus is spread across a sprawling 3207 acres. There are also two regional campuses in Flint and Dearborn. U-M’s average freshman retention rate, which is also an indicator of student satisfaction, is 97 percent.
The university offers 250 undergraduate majors, 100 doctoral and 200 master’s programmes. Popular majors offered by the university are Business, Economics, and Information Science. The graduate program offered by the university offers doctoral degrees in social sciences, humanities and STEM fields. Apart from this, it also offers professional degrees in business, law, pharmacy, social work, architecture, public health, dentistry, and medicine.
The university also has an international student loan program exclusively for international students facing a financial crunch. The university has more than 1400 student clubs, societies, and community service organizations. U-M has a rich athletic heritage. To date, U-M ‘s athletic teams have won more than 50 national championships in 12 sports. Michigan's athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are collectively known as the Wolverines. Also, more than 250 Michigan athletes or coaches have participated in the Olympic games and won more than 150 medals. The university excels in not just academics and research but also in sports and other activities.
It is home to major research centers in optics, wireless integrated microsystems, reconfigurable manufacturing systems, and interdisciplinary research in social sciences. The University of Michigan spends more than $1 billion annually for its research activities, one of the largest research budgets of any US university. In addition to graduate students, undergraduates are also allowed to participate in research projects and work with world-renowned faculty through the unique Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). Michigan is classified among ‘R1: Doctoral Universities’ which means the university comes under the category of ‘Very high research activity’. 50 MacArthur Fellows, 25 Nobel Prize winners, 6 Turing Award winners, and 1 Fields Medalist have been affiliated with U-M as of October 2018. Larry Page, Arthur Miller, Gerald Ford, Michael Phelps, Stephen M. Ross, and Madonna are some of the notable alumni of Michigan University.
